President Erdoğan said during his speech at the reception that he hoped that this day will be a blessing for all teachers and nation adding that, “I would like to use this opportunity to convey my gratitude and thanks to all teachers on the behalf of our nation. I commemorate all teachers who were martyred while on duty, died in natural disasters and accidents with respect. I also would like to wish blessings, health, happiness and a prosperous life to retired teachers who have duly fulfilled their duties and raised faithful generations for this country.”

“We are the work of our teachers“ said Erdoğan adding that he will especially continue to support all kinds of efforts aiming at improving the labor rights of teachers as the President of the country just like he did when he served as the Prime Minister.

“Our teachers should not be sentenced to deal with such issues“

Noting that Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı was also among the guests at the reception, Erdoğan stated that Avcı had shared an information concerning improvement in the salary and other personal rights of teachers earlier and pledged to take further steps within this framework.

“I cannot accept to see that teachers are sentenced to deal with problems such as appointment and salary,” said Erdoğan, “Teachers whom we trusted to raise our children who are the assurance of country’s future should deal with other issues such as how to blend training with education in the same pot and discuss such issues. We must focus on training about values. With the permission of the Almighty, we will join forces to find solutions to the issues of education in the upcoming period.”

President Erdoğan said that “favorite teacher” and “favorite student” ideas which were adapted as a part of an effort of raising “favorite citizens” should be abandoned adding that, “We must focus on seeking ways to raise competent and wise teachers, tutors and students.”

President Erdoğan stated that there are teachers among the guests who have contributed to his life and used this opportunity to convey his gratitude and thanks.

In addition to teachers working at private schools and state schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, teachers working in AFAD camps providing shelter to Syrian refugees, Yunus Emre Foundation, police and military schools were also present at the reception. President Erdoğan congratulated all teachers for their services.

“It is a fact that we have experienced a painful process for the last 200 years in education like we did in every field,” said Erdoğan, “This process continued during the Republic Era. Many concepts were eviscerated in the name of simplifying the language, connection between our history, culture and civilization were broken. As you all aware that there were no teachers in the past, there were tutors. Tutors are blending education with training. There were trainees instead of students. There is no limit in tutoring and training. This is a never-ending process. For many years, education and training in our country was based on a system of transferring existing vast knowledge to next generations. Training and education are the two sides of a whole like the two sides of a coin. Today, teaching and relation between teacher and student are limited with only teaching a class, giving grades and preparing students for examinations. On the other hand, trainer and trainee relation is based on life itself and refers to all fields of life.”

“We have the frame but we have difficulties in the enclosure”

Noting that the government has put its signature on many historical achievements in the last 13 years, President Erdoğan went on to say that, “I personally believe that we have not fulfilled the development we required and wished in the education system in terms of quality of education and culture, yet. It is true that we have achieved many important projects and made very important investments for the reinforcement of education infrastructure. We have achieved to provide physical opportunities which cannot be compared with the past but unfortunately I cannot say that we have achieved the same goal in teaching. We have the frame but we have difficulties in the enclosure. Now, we have to deal with this problem. I believe that we will make an important improvement in terms of curriculum and quality of teaching with the will of the Almighty..”

“We performed a revolution in every field“

President Erdoğan noted that biggest share in the budget was allocated to education, approximately 235 thousand new classrooms were built, one million computers were distributed to students, 888 thousand tablet computers were distributed to teachers and students as a part of FATİH Projects adding that smart boards were installed in almost 187 thousand classrooms.

“More than half of the existing 894 thousand teachers were appointed in the last 13 years. We have introduced the 4+4+4 system in education, lifted bans and offered wide range of elective courses, distributed free textbooks, in short, we have achieved a revolution in every field,” Erdoğan said.

Erdoğan added, “We have built schools, classrooms and we furnished them. Now, we are trying to overcome the teacher shortage. As you see, I cannot say we have achieved all of our goals; we still have a lot to do. A similar situation is valid in the field of culture, too. I believe that our government and the Ministry of National Education have similar assessments.”

“Teaching is a matter of love“

Noting that labor rights of teachers is an important matter, Erdoğan went on to say, “It will be too much to ask from teachers to duly perform their duties if they keep trying to make ends meet but we also face the fact that teaching is a job which can be defined with only salary, personnel rights and office hours. Teachers are role models while performing their jobs as teachers and trainers and teaching is a matter of love. Teacher is an exemplary person for his or her students with all of his or her behaviors. Hazrat Ali has said, “We accept what Allah has given us. Allah gave us knowledge and gave assets to thy enemies. Teachers are persons who have opted for knowledge who have been granted science. The greatest riches for teachers are their students. This is their assets.”
